Guide for juice makers
Sell juice and apple must online
Pressing and bottling juice is food production and must be registered with Mattilsynet. The names are regulated: «juice» and «eplemost» (apple must) are pure fruit juice with no added sugar, while «nectar» may be diluted and sweetened. Juice is heavy to ship, so most makers sell for collection or deliver themselves.
- Register pressing and bottling with Mattilsynet
- «Juice» and «eplemost» can't contain added sugar
- «From concentrate» goes on the label where it applies

What you need in place
- 1RegistrationPressing, pasteurising and bottling is food production. Register with Mattilsynet before you sell, and have routines for hygiene and shelf life.
- 2Product namesJuice and eplemost are 100% fruit with no added sugar. Add water or sugar and it becomes nectar. With more than one fruit, the name lists them by quantity, as in «apple and raspberry juice».
- 3LabellingThe label needs, among other things, the name, volume, a date mark and your name, in Norwegian, plus «from concentrate» where it applies. Online, the mandatory information must be on the product page before purchase.
- 4VATNon-alcoholic juice and apple must carry 15% VAT. This guide doesn't cover cider or anything else with alcohol, which needs a licence.
Boxes, bottles and collection
A 5 litre box of apple must weighs over 5 kilos, and glass bottles break easily. Shipping gets expensive for the customer, so most makers sell for collection at the farm or deliver on fixed days.
The pressing season is short. Let customers pre-order so you know how much to press, and list the rest once it's bottled.
Cafés and shops
Cafés, restaurants and farm shops like to stock local apple must. In the B2B portal they order at their prices, and standing orders are placed automatically.
