Guide for farms
Sell from your farm, online
If you sell food from your farm, the sales must be registered with Mattilsynet, and meat, milk and eggs have their own rules. A farm's online shop is mostly for pre-orders: customers pay online and collect at the farm. It works well alongside REKO rings and Bondens marked, where customers already find you.

What you need in place
- 1RegistrationFarms that produce food must be registered with Mattilsynet, and selling directly from the farm or in a farm shop must be registered too. You do it in Mattilsynet's online forms.
- 2Meat, milk and eggsFood of animal origin has stricter rules. Beef, lamb and pork for sale must be slaughtered at an approved slaughterhouse, and further processing may need approval. Read Mattilsynet's pages on local food (in Norwegian) before you list meat boxes.
- 3LabellingPre-packed food needs a name, ingredients, weight, a date mark and the farm's name, and online the mandatory information must be on the product page before purchase. Loose vegetables and berries have simpler rules.
- 4VATFood carries 15% VAT. Firewood, Christmas trees, flowers and anything else that isn't food carry 25%.
Pre-orders and collection
Meat boxes, Christmas trees and seasonal produce sell best in advance. List a limited number, let customers pay online, and give them a collection day at the farm. You then slaughter, pick or cut to what has actually sold.
If your customers are spread out, you can deliver yourself on fixed days. Vegetables and eggs rarely survive the post.
REKO rings and Bondens marked
REKO rings are local Facebook groups where customers pre-order and collect at a set place and time. Bondens marked, Norway's farmers' markets, run in every county. Both bring you customers who want to buy straight from the farm.
Your own shop turns them into regulars. They find your produce between market days, pay before collection, and get your newsletter when the next season starts.
